Here’s Why a Tilting Tree Can Need Emergency Removal

The decision to remove a tree from your backyard isn't usually a spontaneous one. It's generally a careful decision, with the tree's gradually declining health letting you know that the time has come. The tree might also be perfectly healthy but needs to be removed in line with your landscaping plans. But there might also be a time when you need emergency tree removal.

A Rapid Change

Tree removal becomes an emergency when a tree rapidly becomes dangerous. The speed with which this can happen is almost always caused by extreme weather that has destabilised the tree—and this is what makes it dangerous. The tree could topple over without warning or shed large branches, and this poses a risk to any people, pets or property in the vicinity.

Medium to Large Trees

It's only medium to large trees that can become dangerous in this way. If a small tree or shrub topples over, it's unlikely to be capable of causing injuries or damage. A tree needs to have adequate height (and general mass) to cause damage for it to be considered potentially dangerous. How can you tell that the tree now poses a risk to your family and home?

A Noticeable Tilt

The most telling sign is when a tree takes on a noticeable tilt. The tree may have been partially uprooted, or there may be new cracks in its trunk and larger branches. This development can be caused by a combination of strong winds and heavy rain loosening the soil. The tree's new angle suggests that its root structure has destabilised, and it has been wrenched out of position. It won't necessarily fall, but this has now become far more possible. You need to have the tree assessed by an arborist.

As Quickly as Possible

If it's determined that the tree's root system can no longer support its height and weight, emergency tree removal is likely to be the recommendation—to be performed as quickly as possible. In residential settings, an arborist is likely to section the tree. From the top down, its trunk will be cut into sections, with each section then being safely lowered to the ground. This prevents the tree from actually toppling over.

A tilting tree can quickly become a toppling tree. If one of the trees in your backyard goes from vertical to angled, it's important to urgently contact a local arborist, since you may need emergency tree removal.
